Live update: AHSAA volleyball state tournament day 1

The 51st annual AHSAA volleyball state championship tournament features 56 teams competing for championships in seven classes.

Class 6A, 5A, 3A and 2A play quarterfinal and semifinal matches today at the Birmingham Crossplex today with championships at the Bill Harris Arena on Wednesday.

Class 7A, 4A and 1A play quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Wednesday with title matches set for Thursday.

Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds for each class will be played on four courts at the Birmingham Crossplex.

10:43 AM, Makos move on: Sophomore Amelia Edgeworth served four straight points to start the game as the unranked Makos (28-17) rolled to a 15-6 win in the decisive fifth set for a 3-2 victory over fourth-ranked Spring Garden to advance to the semifinals against Hatton at 4 p.m.

Class 6A action has started with the defending state champion Mountain Brook Spartans gunning for their sixth title since 2014 in quarterfinal action against St. James. In other quarterfinal action, it’s No. 8 Hazel Green against No. 5 Saraland, No. 4 St. Paul’s vs. No. 10 Athens and No. 3 Homewood battling unranked Northridge

10:29 AM, Fifth set action: We’re heading to the fifth set with upstart and unranked Orange Beach rallying for a 25-22 win in the fourth set to pull even with fourth-ranked Spring Garden at 2-2.

10:24 AM, Early action: The 51st annual state volleyball tournament in Class 2A action is underway at the Birmingham Crossplex with defending champion No. 2 Addison (45-6) vying for its 13th state championship in either Class 1A or 2A.

The eight-team field is stacked with No. 1 G.W. Long, No. 2, Addison, No. 3 Sand Rock, No. 4 Spring Garden, No. 5 Hatton, No. 6 Ariton, No. 8 Washington County and unranked Orange Park.

Hatton (27-20) breezed past Ariton 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-17) and Addison (46-6) blanked Washington County 3-0 to both each the semifinals later this afternoon at 4 p.m.
